UNEARTHED

About

Unearthed is an exhibition of ancient pottery at the Hill Museum & Manuscript Library. It features delicate ceramics from the banks of the Dead Sea crafted over five thousand years ago. This exhibition catalogue accompanies the exhibit and guides the viewers' eyes towards some of the particularly interesting details.

I begun this project as a lead researcher before SARS-COV-19 shut down the world. As my research was continuing, I thought it would be best to still create something useful being that the HMML was closed to the public until further notice. Once it reopens, I will be continuing my research and assisting in the planning of the final exhibition.

Branding

Everything needs a brand, even small exhibitions in local museums. Unearthed was an unbridled opportunity to combine both my interest in art and in history. This design is sophisticated and refined, something the HMML has become known for internationally. The text is limited to a handful of descriptions outside of the articles so the pottery itself can shine in the spotlight.

The grey and white color palette emphasize the coloring on the ceramics as well as convey the tone of the museum as a whole. The background of the images themselves has been stripped away so the pottery can contrast with the colors on the page.

Background

All the pottery featured in the exhibition catalogue is located in the secure Arca Artium vaults on the campus of Saint John's University. They were originally found at the Bâb edh-Dhrâ digsite in Jordan and was taken for research in collaboration with the Jordanian Branch of Antiquities. The particular pieces featured in this catalogue were taken close to the banks of the Dead Sea during the 1977 and 1979 seasons.
